What are NCI's plans for using the NHIS to monitor cancer control issues in the future?

NCI plans to continue collaborating with the CDC Cancer Prevention and Control Program to monitor use of cancer prevention services included in the Healthy People 2010 Objectives. The two agencies co-sponsored the Cancer Control Supplement (CCS) to the 2000 NHIS Core. NCI and CDC plan to administer a CCS every five years (including all decennial Census years) as well as selected questions on cancer screening in some interim years. CCS questions reflect current scientific and programmatic concerns.

The 2005 CCS, similar in design to the 2000 CCS, was released in 2006.

Ten questions on cancer screening and sun protection were included in the 2003 NHIS Core. NCI expects to field questions on knowledge of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the acceptability of the HPV vaccine as well as cancer screening in the 2008 NHIS Core.
