NIH eSubmission Items of Interest — November 20, 2006

The R01 Parent is posted!

NIH continues to welcome unsolicited, investigator-initiated applications through the use of general “Parent Announcements”. Information on “Parent Announcements” and the “R01 Parent” is now posted. Remember to pay attention to the Opening date in the Key Dates section of the FOA. You can start working on your R01 applications now, but you can’t actually submit the application until the Opening date of January 5, 2007.

Keep an Eye on the NIH Guide

Lots of new notices have just been released to the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts – check them out!

Introducing Version 2A Forms

We are now posting all new Funding Opportunity Announcements (regardless of grant program/mechanism) using Version 2A forms. Version 2A forms are the same as Version 2 forms except the R&R Senior/Key Person Profile (Expanded) form replaces the standard R&R Senior/Key Person Profile form in the application packages.

Since the functionality gained in the Expanded form is not often needed for the smaller grant programs, we will not be updating announcements that were posted prior to this week to use the Version 2A forms. Previously posted announcements will be left alone until we need to move to the new Grants.gov Adobe forms. The application guide has been updated to include instructions for both the standard and Expanded versions of the form.

The new Expanded form allows for the collection of up to 40 senior/key persons in structured data fields. The process for including the PD/PI and the next seven senior/key persons is similar to the use of the standard form. For more than eight senior/key persons you will be instructed to create and attach supplementary forms for each additional eight senior/key persons up to 40 total senior/key persons. The form-in-form model is similar to how the R&R Subaward Budget form works. As with the R&R Subaward Budget form you will be attaching PureEdge forms within the PureEdge form – do not convert the supplemental forms to PDF before attaching. I know it is tempting to include some of the key persons in structured data and then attach the rest in a single document, but resist the temptation…Grants.gov will let you, but our system will not! You will only be able to use the attachment for “Additional Senior/Key Person Profile(s)” at the bottom of the form if you have used each of the 40 structured data slots.

On a happy note…Although NIH prefers the Senior/Key Persons to be entered alphabetically, we realize the system is not conducive to inserting individuals into their proper alphabetic spot once the form has been started, so we have relaxed the requirement for an alphabetic list (you will see new language in a future update of the application guide).

Multiple Principal Investigators and Electronic Submission

With the transition of R01 applications to electronic submission you will begin seeing more Funding Opportunity Announcements that allow more than one Principal Investigator (PI) on individual research awards (see the Multiple-PI website http://grants.nih.gov/grants/multi_pi/index.htm for more information on this initiative).

Here are some important tips to keep in mind when submitting an electronic application that includes multiple-PIs:
