About Health Promotion Research: Staff Expertise

Genevieve Fridlund Dunton, Ph.D, MPH
Cancer Prevention Fellow
Health Promotion Research Branch
Behavioral Research Program

Genevieve Fridlund Dunton is a Cancer Prevention Fellow at the National Cancer Institute. She earned a doctoral degree in psychology and social behavior with an emphasis in health psychology from the University of California, Irvine. She also holds a master of public health degree with focus on health promotion from the University of Southern California. Dr. Dunton’s research examines psychosocial and environmental determinants of physical activity and other health behaviors capable of reducing cancer risk. She has worked on a number longitudinal and intervention studies that examine psychological mediators of health behavior change. She has also used real-time data capture methodology such as Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to assess antecedents and concomitants of physical activity. Her doctoral work examined how anticipated emotions differentially influence physical activity adoption and maintenance among middle-aged adults. During her public health training, she investigated the extent to which environmental characteristics and motivational factors predicted overall levels of physical activity on a multi-use urban trail. Her current research projects include an EMA study that examines the time-lagged and concurrent effects of psychosocial factors on physical activity among middle-aged and older adults and an investigation of demographic and temporal patterns in the social and physical environments of physical activity reported in the American Time Use Survey.
