Winter 1998 Building a Healthy Nation for 2010 The Nation's health objectives for 2010 are being formed and all Americans can comment. Developing the objectives for the Healthy People 2010 initiative offers the public the opportunity to help define what the country must do to promote healthy behaviors, achieve improved health outcomes, reduce risk factors, and assure access to preventive strategies and health services for all citizens.

Healthy People 2010 follows Healthy People 2000, the nation's current prevention initiative. The Healthy People 2000 objectives served as the basis for monitoring and tracking the Nation's health status, health risks, and use of preventive services. The 2010 objectives are being developed by more than 600 national membership organizations and State and territorial public health, mental health, substance abuse, and environmental agencies. During the fall of 1997, individuals submitted modifications, deletions, or new draft objectives online at
http://web.health.gov/healthypeople.

Another opportunity for public comment will occur in late 1998. Public comments will be incorporated into the final version of Healthy People 2010, to be published in 2000.
