Oral Insulin Study  (TrialNet)

Who can participate?
To be screened for the study, you must be: (1) 1 to 45 years of age and have a brother, sister, child, or parent with type 1 diabetes; OR (2) 1 to 20 years of age and have a cousin, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, half-sibling, or grandparent with type 1 diabetes.
What is this study?
The study will test whether oral insulin helps to delay or prevent type 1 diabetes. Results from a recently completed study (called DPT-1) suggest that oral insulin might delay or prevent type 1 diabetes in some people found to be at risk.
Why is it being done?
Researchers hope that, in some people, oral insulin could prevent type 1 diabetes or delay it as long as possible.
If I enroll in this study, what do I have to do?
You will first have your blood tested to see if you have certain antibodies. If you do, you will have further blood tests to see if you are eligible to join the study.

If you are eligible for the study, you will take one study capsule each day. Half of the people will take capsules filled with insulin and half of the people will take a placebo (capsules that contain an inactive substance). You will not know whether your capsules contain insulin or a placebo. You will come to a study center for blood tests every 6 months, and at other times as needed.

Can I participate in other studies if I participate in this one?
You cannot participate in other studies while participating in this study.
