Avon Foundation – AACR International Scholar Awards in Breast Cancer Research

Purpose: To enhance the quality of cancer research in limited resource settings by supporting junior researchers to conduct research in the U.S.
Eligibility: Nationals or permanent residents of countries where opportunities for specialized scientific training are limited who are residing and conducting research within a low or middle income country. Applicants must be in their first faculty position and have been in faculty status for no longer than ten years by December 31, 2005. Applicants should possess a doctoral level degree and have the title Instructor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 yearly salary; one time award of US$25,000 institutional expenses, including travel, insurance, professional development, etc; and up to US$2,000 to support attendance at AACR annual meetings.
Duration: Two years.

AACR-Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award

Purpose: To support basic, translational, or clinical cancer research by a tenure-track scientist.
Eligibility: Tenure-track scientists at the level of Assistant Professor who have completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships no later than July 1 of the application year and not more than five years prior to the Award year. Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible. Citizenship and residency unrestricted. Candidates must be nominated or co-nominated by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of the AACR.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000 for salary, benefits, laboratory supplies, and limited domestic travel. Attendance at the AACR Annual Meeting is mandatory.
Duration: One year.

AACR Career Development Awards

Purpose: To support basic, translational, or clinical cancer research and to support investigators moving from postdoctoral studies to faculty status. The five award programs focus on the following areas of research: translational or prevention lung cancer research, clinical cancer research focused on the HER family pathway, pancreatic cancer, translational pancreatic cancer research, and angiogenesis.
Eligibility: Applicants for the programs in angiogenesis, pancreatic cancer, and the HER family pathway must be affiliated with U.S. institutions. At the start of the grant term, candidates must be in the first, second, or third year of their first full-time appointment after completing postdoctoral studies. Eligible positions include Instructor, Acting Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent. Citizenship and residency unrestricted. Employees or subcontractors of a national government or private industry are not eligible. Candidates must be nominated or co-nominated by an Active, Emeritus, or Honorary Member of the AACR.

Research Scholar Grants in Cancer Control: Health Services and Health Policy Research

Purpose: Support investigator-initiated research projects in health services and health policy outcomes research.

Mentored Research Scholar Grant in Applied and Clinical Research

Purpose: To support mentored research by full-time faculty, typically within the first four years of their appointment, with the goal of becoming independent investigators in clinical, cancer control and prevention, epidemiologic, psychosocial, behavioral, health services and health policy research.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$135,000 per year (direct costs) plus 8% allowable indirect costs. These grants are not renewable.
Duration: Up to five years.
Deadline: April 1 and October 15.

Cancer Control Career Development Awards for Primary Care Physicians

Purpose: To support primary care physicians with a rank of instructor to assistant professor who are pursuing an academic career with an emphasis on cancer control.
Financial Provisions: US$50,000, US$55,000, and US$60,000 per year. The grant also provides up to US$10,000 additional funds per year for support of mentor.
Duration: Up to three years.

Purpose: To support to an ASM member to teach a hands-on, highly interactive short course on a single topic in the microbiological sciences at a Latin American institution of higher learning.
Eligibility: Joint application must be submitted by ASM member from North America and Latin American host institution.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$4,000 for travel costs, supplies and equipment, and local administrative costs. ASM funds should be matched by the host institution, but matching funds may be in-kind contributions.

ASM-PAHO Professorship for Latin America

Purpose: To support to an ASM member to teach a hands-on, highly interactive short course on a single topic in the field of antimicrobial resistance at an institution of higher learning in Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, or Peru.
Eligibility: Joint application must be submitted by ASM member from North America and Latin American host institution.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$4,000 for travel costs, supplies and equipment, and local administrative costs. ASM funds should be matched by the host institution, but matching funds may be in-kind contributions.
Duration: One to two weeks

ASM-IUSTF Indo-U.S. Professorship in Microbiology

Purpose: To enable microbiologists in India and the United States to visit institutions in the other country to teach short courses (Teaching Professorship), or to enable microbiologists in India to conduct a collaborative research project in the US (Research Professorship).
Eligibility: Indian and U.S. microbiologists. ASM membership not required.
Financial Provisions: Typically US$4,000 but up to US$8,000 for travel costs, supplies and equipment, and local administrative costs. ASM funds should be matched by the host institution, but matching funds may be in-kind contributions. ASM will provide one year of ASM membership to all participants.
Duration: Teaching professorship – one to two weeks; research professorship – six weeks to six months.
Deadline: April 15, October 15.

UNESCO-ASM Visiting Resource Person Program

Purpose: To enable members of ASM who plan to visit developing nations on academic or other business to arrange to spend a day with colleagues at a university or research institute in a major city. ASM will reimburse the member’s expenses for local travel and one or two nights in a hotel. Information on this program can be found on the ASM website.

Gorgas Memorial Institute Research Award

Purpose: To enhance and facilitate the development of scientific linkages between Panama, nations of Central America, tropical and sub-tropical South America and the Caribbean Islands, Mexico and the United States and Canada through support of short-term travel for young research investigators from these regions for the purposes of: (1) establishing collaborative biomedical research projects focusing on tropical diseases of health importance to people living in these areas, and (2) learning new techniques and approaches applicable to the study of such diseases.
Eligibility: Applicants should have Ph.D. or M.D. level training in a relevant field. They should be citizens or permanent residents of the Americas, and hold a position at a research, medical, public health or teaching institution in that country.
Financial Provisions: Awards will generally not exceed US$25,000 to cover the total costs of round-trip travel, housing and supplies required for a project.

Innovative Research Grant

Purpose: To broaden the base of inquiry in fundamental biomedical science, clinical research or behavioral research with relevance to rheumatic disease by encouraging applications for research proposals that involve an especially high degree of innovation and novelty or represent a special opportunity to address unique and relevant research questions.
Eligibility: Independent, self-directed investigators with any terminal degree are invited to apply. Citizenship unrestricted.

Arthritis Clinical Translational Award

Purpose: To foster the productivity of independent physician-scientists at the mid-career level who will strengthen translational research in academic health centers, both through their own studies as well as their mentoring of the next generation of physician-scientist trainees. It will provide support to explore fundamental scientific questions, to apply the resulting knowledge at the bedside, and to bring insights from the clinical setting back to the laboratory for further exploration.
Eligibility: M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. engaged in translational research in arthritis related questions at the assistant professor level with a minimum of three years of experience and track record of publication, independent grant support. Citizenship unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: The award amount is US$166,000 per year.

The Damon Runyon Scholar Award

Purpose: To support the development of outstanding biomedical scientists as independent investigators in the cancer field by ensuring the continuity of their research productivity at the critical transition from their research training to their first faculty position.
Eligibility: All applications must be submitted within the first three years of tenure-track faculty appointment. Non-U.S. citizens may apply only if they have a regular faculty appointment at a U.S. institution. Visiting appointments do not qualify.

Clinical Investigator Award

Purpose: To support young physician-scientists conducting patient-oriented cancer research.
Eligibility: The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident. The applicant must have received an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree(s) from an accredited institution and be board-eligible. Applicants may apply during final year of subspecialty training or within the first four years of initial assistant professorship appointment. Applications will only be accepted from institutions that have been invited to submit them by the Foundation. Only two nominations per institution, including affiliated schools, will be accepted.
Financial Provisions: Retiring of up to US$100,000 in medical school debt, stipend of US$100,000 per year, research allowance of US$50,000 per year.
Duration: Three years.

Eligibility: Physician scientists conducting clinical research who have received an M.D. or foreign equivalent from an accredited institution and are working in a U.S. academic medical center or other nonprofit research institution. Citizenship is unrestricted. Applicants must have a full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor level or below and have been appointed to their first full-time faculty position between January 31, 2001 and January 31, 2006.

Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award

Purpose: To support the research and mentoring activities of mid-career physician scientists.
Eligibility: Applicants must have an M.D., and M.D./Ph.D., or a foreign M.D. equivalent; must have a full time university appointment at the level of Associate Professor or above as of February 14, 2006; must have been appointed to their first full-time faculty position no earlier than February 14, 1991; and must have an established translational clinical research program in any disease area. Clinical Interfaces Award Program

Purpose: To support collaborations across disciplines, to demonstrate successful models for clinical research at the interface of multiple disciplines, and to support interdisciplinary and inter-institutional endeavors that go beyond the program project mindset.
Eligibility: Teams of investigators from at least three disciplines, all with advanced degrees. One must be a clinical researcher. Team leader must work in a U.S. nonprofit institution, though the team may include investigators at other institutions in the U.S. and overseas.

Operations Research on AIDS Care and Treatment in Africa

Purpose: To support health operations research in order to improve the care and treatment of AIDS patients in resource-limited settings, inform antiretroviral therapy policy and practice, and to improve outcomes of the roll-out and scale-up of antiretroviral therapy in Africa.
Eligibility: Investigators or teams of investigators working with healthcare teams that provide care and treatment to AIDS patients in Africa. Practical Courses, Workshops, Conferences and Conference Series

Purpose: To support high quality training and collaboration in the life sciences.
Eligibility: Any scientist in the field of molecular biology or related science in Europe. Funding is also available for the organization of courses and workshops outside of Europe as part of EMBO World Activities.
Financial Provisions: Depending on the meeting type, a maximum grant of €30,000 per meeting is available, paid in the calendar year in which the event takes place. EMBO will advance a percentage of the funds prior to the meeting and the remainder on receipt of the final accounts, reports, and questionnaires.
Deadlines: Twelve months in advance with the deadlines of February 1 and August 1.

EMBO Lectures

Purpose: To support lectures delivered by EMBO members at major international meetings thereby facilitating scientific exchange and bringing EMBO opportunities to the attention of a wide audience.
Eligibility: The lecture is a plenary lecture and is entitled "The EMBO Lecture."  The meeting should be a high profile meeting with an international perspective. Meetings on topics that can be justified as being under-represented in EMBO activities are also considered. Speaker must be a member of EMBO.
Financial Provisions: A maximum of €1,000 is available to support speakers at European meetings and for meetings outside of Europe a maximum of €3,000 will be provided. The expenses must be fully justified and should include the travel, subsistence and related direct expenses of the speaker. Normally support will be provided for one speaker only. Requests for repeat support for annual meetings will be considered.

FAIMER Institute and International Fellowships in Medical Education Program

Purpose: To promote excellence in international medical education by offering faculty from schools of medicine abroad educational opportunities in the United States. Medical school faculty will participate in a two year program that includes two residential sessions in the United States followed by a year of mentoring in the home country. Selected fellows can then pursue advanced degrees at medical institutions worldwide.
Eligibility: Candidates for this program must: reside and work in their home countries at the time of application; have a graduate or professional degree in clinical medicine or in a basic science that is taught in a medical education setting in the U.S., or a professional degree in education; hold an academic appointment as a faculty member in a school of medicine or postgraduate medical education institute; have not less than three years of work experience as a faculty member in the home country following completion of their formal academic and clinical training; document competence in written and spoken English; have the endorsement of a home country medical school or postgraduate medical education institute for the proposed educational program; have a position in the home country medical school, organization, or institution to which they will return upon completion of the fellowship.
Financial Provisions: The institute portion will include round-trip travel, and course materials for the fellow. The fellowship portion includes a monthly stipend.

Purpose: To support investigators in pursuing diabetes-related clinical research and in transitioning to independent faculty or research appointments.
Eligibility: The successful candidate will have an M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.., hold an appointment or joint appointment in a subspecialty of clinical medicine, and conduct human clinical research. In exceptional circumstances, non-M.D. candidates will be considered if their work is likely to contribute significantly to a clinical outcome. Financial Provisions: Awards are in the amount of US$150,000 total costs per year (up to US$75,000 of this may be requested for research allowance, which can include a technician, supplies, equipment, and travel of up to US$2,000 per year). Salary request must be consistent with the established salary structure of the applicant’s institution, and equipment in years other than the first must be strongly justified. Innovative Grants

Purpose: To support highly innovative basic and clinical research that is at the developmental stage by providing “seed” money for investigative work based on sound scientific hypotheses for which preliminary data are insufficient for a regular research grant but that are likely to result in important results for the treatment of diabetes and its complications. Areas of scientific need are highlighted in the RFA each year.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an M.D., D.M.D., D.V.M., Ph.D., or equivalent and have a faculty position or equivalent at a college, university, medical school, or other research facility. Applications may be submitted by domestic and foreign non-profit organizations, public and private, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local governments, and eligible agencies of the federal government. Ordinarily, for-profit organizations will not be considered, except under special circumstances.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$100,000 in direct costs and indirect costs of 10%, for a total of US$110,000.

Senior scientists must explain, in detail, how they themselves (and not only their research assistants and postdoctoral fellows) will use the requested funds to pursue "break-out" research different from that which is ongoing in their laboratories.
Financial Provisions: Maximum of US$450,000 total costs. Funds can be used for any research-based expenses, including travel, equipment, and supplies. Funds can be used to support collaborative projects. A percentage of the funds can also be used to support small workshops organized by the applicant where the goal of the workshop is to gather expertise in support of the research objective.

Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholarship

Purpose: To provide support to independent investigators in the field of neuroscience as related to multiple sclerosis at the beginning of their academic careers.
Eligibility: M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent with no more than five years of independent research experience. Applicants must have received sufficient research training at pre- and/or postdoctoral levels to be capable of independent research. Must hold or have been offered position equivalent to assistant professor at an approved institution in the U.S. Citizenship is unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Candidates may request up to 75% of annual salary support with a 3% annual increase in each of the remaining four years. The maximal direct cost that may be requested in the grant budget of the award is US$30,000 in the first year, increasing to US$40,000 in the last year.
Duration: Five years.

Research Grants

Purpose: To support fundamental as well as applied studies, non-clinical or clinical in nature, including projects in patient management technology.
Eligibility: No citizenship restrictions. Principal investigator should be personally and actively responsible for the conduct of research. Institutions are official recipients of grants and may be based in any country. Applicants are requested to exhaust all local resources, including governmental granting agencies and other national multiple sclerosis societies, before coming to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of the U.S. with a request to support research in a foreign country.
Financial Provisions: Grant funds may be requested for the following categories of expenditure: salaries for professional and nonprofessional personnel, patient costs, permanent equipment, consumable supplies, travel, other expenditures not included under the above categories, and indirect costs.
Duration: One to five years.

Pilot Research Grants

Purpose: To provide limited short-term support of novel high-risk research.

Grants for University Teachers

Purpose: To enable higher education faculty to teach at colleges and universities in developing countries.

Conference Grants

Purpose: To allow UK – based scientists to actively participate in international conferences.
Eligibility: Applicant must have a Ph.D. or extensive experience at an equivalent level by the date of the conference. Active EU research scientists working in a UK university or institute, retired scientists still active in science, and non-EU citizens who have held a permanent position at the postdoctoral level at a UK institute for at least three years can all apply. Applicants must present a paper or poster or chair a session at the conference, and must submit an application to the Society through their university.
Financial Provisions: Airfare, subsistence of up to £60 per day, and registration fees of up to £300.
Duration: Funding is for the first ten days of a visit where conference participation is the main or sole purpose of visit. Auxiliary visits to scientific institutions can be included up to a maximum of ten days although the total duration of the visit can be longer.
Deadline: March 1, June 1, September 1, December 1.

International Joint Projects

Purpose: To support bilateral research projects with teams from the UK and an eligible country. In addition to this program, the Royal Society offers several funding opportunities for specific countries. See website for complete information.
Eligibility: Available to European and Former Soviet Union countries, China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, and certain countries in Latin America. Project leaders must be of at least postdoctoral status and of proven research ability. UK collaborators should be resident in the UK. EU citizens may apply provided they hold a permanent position in the UK, and non-EU citizens may apply provided they have held a permanent position at a UK institute for at least three consecutive years.
Financial Provisions: Up to £6,000 per year to cover travel, subsistence, and UK leader’s research expenses.

Research Grants

Purpose: To provide seed funding for new projects initiated by researchers early in their careers or established scientists wishing to change the direction of their research.
Eligibility: UK residents with postdoctoral level or equivalent status at the time of application and a permanent or limited-tenure position at an eligible institution. Non-tenured researchers resident in the UK and working in association with a UK university may apply for support for research in the history of science.
Financial Provisions: Maximum grant of £15,000.

Short Visits from the UK and to the UK

Fields of study: All areas of natural sciences.
Purpose: To initiate one-to-one collaborations, explore opportunities to build lasting networks and gain access to complementary equipment, data observations and ideas.
Eligibility: Both Scientists must be of postdoctoral status or equivalent. Applicants for outgoing trips or hosts for incoming trips must be British citizens resident in the UK. EU citizens who have a permanent position at a UK institute can apply. Non-UK/EU citizens who have held a permanent position at a UK institute for at least three years can apply. Incoming scientists should reside in the country of citizenship at time of application. Individual Short Visits

Purpose: To support short visits by Swiss researchers to foreign research institutes or short visits by foreign researchers to Swiss research institutes. Visits should result in ongoing research co-operation. Visits for the purpose of presenting papers or attending conferences will not be funded.
Eligibility: Applications must be made by a researcher at a Swiss university or research institute who is planning to take or host a visit. Applicants must have doctorates.
Financial Provisions: Travel costs and daily subsistence.
Duration: One week to three months.
Deadline: Open, at least two months before proposed visit.

International Scientific Seminars

Purpose: To provide a portion of support for a meeting among Swiss researchers and international researchers to sound out new opportunities for cooperation and to prepare joint research projects.
Eligibility: Researchers in South Africa, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Financial Provisions: SNSF provides partial funding along with a research promotion organization in the partner country.
Deadline: Open for applications from China and South Korea. The other countries can apply only after a call for proposals.

Investigator-Driven Research Program

Purpose: To support research in all fields.
Eligibility: Researchers working in Switzerland, regardless of nationality. Applications are only available in German or French.
Financial Provisions: Varies by project.
Deadline: March 1 and October 1.

Grants for Scientific Meetings

Purpose: To support the organization of high level international and regional scientific activities in developing countries, such as conferences, workshops, symposia, and special meetings.
Eligibility: Organizers of international and regional scientific meetings in developing countries.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$3,000, in the form of travel grants for principal speakers or participants from other developing countries.
Deadline: June 1 for meetings to be held January – June of the following year, December 1 for meetings to be held July – December the following year.

ICSU-TWAS-UNESCO-UNU/IAS Visiting Scientist Programme

Fields of Study: Natural sciences other than Mathematics or Physics.

Purpose: To provide institutions and research groups in the South, especially those with limited outside contacts, with the opportunity to establish long-term links with world leaders in science and so help develop capacity-building in their country. Prospective host institutions can invite internationally renowned experts in areas of science other than mathematics and physics to lecture. The visiting scientist will be expected to interact closely with faculty and students of the host institution with the aim of strengthening its existing activities and/or assisting in the establishment of new lines of research. The visiting scientist could also deliver lectures and seminars to research students, supervise students, conduct research and discuss future collaborative partnerships.
Eligibility: Only persons who have attained international recognition in their fields of science will be considered for support under this program. Invitations of women are particularly welcome.
Financial Provisions: Travel expenses plus an honorarium of US$500.
Duration: At least one month.
Deadline: October 1.

Research Grants Programme

Purpose : To support high-level basic science research by scientists in developing countries in the fields of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
Eligibility : Nationals of developing countries with an advanced academic degree and some research experience. Applicants should hold positions at universities or research institutions in developing countries where basic tools of research are seriously lacking. Most grants are awarded to scientists under the age of 45.
Financial Provisions: Up to US$10,000 to cover scientific apparatus, consumable materials and specialized literature.
Duration: One year, with extensions possible.
Deadline: July 1, December 1.

TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme

Purpose: To enable competent researchers from the global South to visit designated centers of excellence for research collaboration.
Eligibility: Scientists in developing countries. Special consideration will be given to scientists from isolated institutions.
Financial Provisions: Travel expenses plus a contribution towards subsistence costs of US$300.00. Host centers cover living expenses.
Duration: Three years, during which s/he can visit a Center twice for a period of two to three months.
Deadline: December 1.

CAS-TWAS Fellowships for Visiting Scholars

Purpose: To provide support for scientists who wish to complete advanced research in natural sciences in China.
Eligibility: Scientists from developing countries other than China who are 55 years old or younger, hold a Ph.D. in natural sciences, and have a regular research assignment with at least five years of postdoctoral research experience.
Financial Provisions: TWAS covers travel expenses while the Chinese Academy of Sciences covers living expenses.
Duration: One to three months.
Deadline: August 31.

Fields of Study: Pediatric medical research.

Research Grants

Purpose: To support clinical and translational medical research that seeks to improve children’s health where insufficient research and investigation have been performed and to support medical research that seeks to prevent or cure children’s critical illnesses.
Eligibility: Citizenship and location unrestricted. The Fund supports both domestic ( U.S.) and international research, but its current focus is domestic. The Fund does not award grants for general operations, construction or renovation of buildings or facilities, loans, student aid, scholarships, or support of other funds or institutions. Purchase of major equipment (items over US$1000, such as computers or vehicles) is strongly discouraged and rarely funded. The Fund excludes research using human fetal tissue.
Financial Provisions: Financial support may be provided for supplies, minor equipment, and technical personnel assistance as well as up to 20% salary support for the principal investigator.
Duration: Grants usually range up to three years.
Deadline: There is no deadline for submission. Concept papers are accepted year round and will be responded to within six to eight weeks. Full applications are provided by invitation only.

An application will not be accepted from a person who is already in Australia. Cooperative Grants Program

Purpose: To support high-quality, innovative, basic and applied research and development by establishing sustainable U.S.-Eurasian research collaborations, to provide an alternative to emigration for Eurasian scientists, and to fully employ former weapons research scientists in civilian research. Fields of study include natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, and biomedical and behavioral sciences.
Eligibility: Citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. and citizens and permanent residents of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, or Uzbekistan.
Financial Provisions: US$65,000 total. At least 80% of the funds awarded to each project will be used for project-related expenses of the Eurasian component of the research team, including institutional support. No more than 20% may be used for U.S. team expenses.
Duration: Two years

Between Europe and the Orient – A Focus on Research and Higher Education in/on Central Asia and the Caucasus

Purpose: To support research by German scholars relating to Central Asia as well as training of and collaborative research with Central Asian scholars. Funding may be used for research projects on issues relevant to the region, travel and training for regional scientists, partnership projects, language training, or symposia and summer schools. All fields of humanities and sciences except clinical medicine are eligible.

Interplay between Molecular Conformations and Biological Function

Purpose: To support research that aims at analyzing, modulating and controlling multiple conformational states in biological systems. Accordingly, the funding initiative intends to foster interdisciplinary research at the interface between chemistry and biosciences (including biophysics and modeling). High priority is given to a combination of synthetic chemistry, structural analyses and functional studies.
Financial Provisions: Funding will cover costs for personnel and non-personnel resources, including travel expenses and consumables.
Duration: Two to three years with the possibility to apply for an extension totaling five years.
Deadline: Proposals due September 15, 2006.

Extraordinary Projects

Purpose: To support projects that may not fall under the scope of the current programs. By so doing, the Foundation wishes to create a forum for ideas and concepts connected with path-breaking issues, opening up fresh perspectives by bringing together different disciplines and methodical approaches – both in the field of research, as well as higher education, and in the interplay of science, practice and the public sphere.
Eligibility: Successful applications must not only fulfill the most rigorous scientific requirements, but also be able to provide plausible grounds to explain why support cannot be expected from any other institution and why the Foundation should become involved.
Deadline: Open. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the organization and to submit a partial proposal before developing a full application.

Project Grant

Purpose: To provide funding for high quality projects in basic and clinical sciences relevant to human and animal health.
Eligibility: Teams in the UK or Ireland, or international collaborations involving researchers in the UK or Ireland. Partnerships with developed country universities must be primarily conducted in the UK and Ireland. Projects involving developing country institutions are highly encouraged and may have their “center of gravity” within the developing world.
Financial Provisions: Between £150,000 and £300,000 overall, including salaries for research assistants and/or technicians, materials and consumables, the purchase and maintenance of animals or equipment, and collaborative travel (including meeting travel).
Duration: Three years.
Deadline: Open, at least six months in advance of project commencement.

Senior Clinical Fellowships in Tropical Medicine

Purpose: To support outstanding UK and EEA clinical researchers in conducting research in a developing country
Eligibility: UK and EEA nationals and legal residents with a Ph.D. or M.D., a strong publication record, and a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene or a commitment to undertake one. All applications must be submitted through one of the four Wellcome Trust Centres for Research in Clinical Tropical Medicine (http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/Funding/Biomedical-science/Application-information/index.htm).
Financial Provisions: Salary, research costs between £50,000 and £200,000 per year, a flexible funding allowance, support to attend scientific meetings, and an overseas allowance.
Duration: Five years, based primarily in a developing tropical country, renewable once in a 50:50 cost sharing scheme with host institution.
Deadline: Preliminary applications March 8 and July 7 2006. Full applications, if invited, May 3 and September 1 2006.

HCPC Project and programme grants

Note:A special time-limited funding initiative, the Health Consequences of Population Change Programme (HCPCP) fellowships will run for the last time in 2006.
Purpose: To support novel investigator-led research in the area of population change and its impact on health. Research can be carried out in any developing country or restructuring country of Eastern Europe.
Eligibility: Principal applicants must hold an established post in a university, medical school, or similar research institution (or, in exception cases, non-governmental organizations). Priority will be given to applicants from developing countries who demonstrate a commitment to addressing local health problems.
Financial Provisions: Full direct project costs. Proposals may include some provision for research training of investigators from less developed countries.
Duration: Up to three years for research projects and five years for research programs.
Deadline: Open, but the full application (invited after submission and approval of a preliminary application) must be submitted at least six months before the next Science Funding Committee meeting.

They will be expected to have an established research interest in biomedical ethics (i.e. a publication record in biomedical ethics), or to be actively pursuing a research career in biomedical ethics.
Financial Provisions: £1000 towards traveling expenses and, in some cases, subsistence expenses.
Deadline: Open, at least two months before travel.

Project Grants

Purpose: To support the direct costs of a research project concerning biomedical ethics in developing countries.
Eligibility: Principal applicants should be based in a developing country. Co-applicants may be based in a developing country or in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applicants must normally hold an established academic post in a university or other institution.
Financial Provisions: Salary and associated costs for research assistants and other project support staff, travel (including to conferences), and equipment.
Duration: Three years.

Small Project Grant

Purpose: To meet the direct costs of a modest research project related to biomedical ethics in developing countries.
Eligibility: Principal applicants should be based in a developing country. Co-applicants may be based in a developing country or in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Applicants must normally hold an established academic post in a university or other institution.
Financial Provisions: Approximately £30,000 for salaries for assistants and support staff, travel, equipment, and other essential expenses.

Purpose: To support seminars and similar initiatives relevant to biomedical ethics in developing countries.

Fields of Study: Basic research in neurobiology, i.e., invertebrate and vertebrate (excluding clinical) neurobiology, specifically investigations of neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior.

Research Grants

Purpose: To support established scientists in conducting neurobiology research.
Eligibility: Established scientists of all ages working at accredited institutions in the United States. Research grants will not be awarded to investigators who have already received, or expect to receive, substantial support from other sources. The Foundation currently defines "substantial" as approximately US$200,000 per year (excluding Principal Investigator's salary). The principal investigator must hold no less than the position of assistant professor, or the equivalent, in order to apply.
Financial Provisions: Research grants normally range from US$30,000 to US$75,000 per year.
Duration: Up to three years.
Deadline: Letter of intent deadlines are January 15, April 15, and October 1. Application deadlines are June 1, September 1, and February 15.

Grants-in-Aid

Purpose: To support researchers in becoming stable and established researchers.
Eligibility: Researchers at the assistant professor level at institutions in the U.S. who experience difficulty in competing for research funds because they have not yet become firmly established. Grants-in-Aid will also be made to senior scientists.

Fields of Study: Tropical diseases, including African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, dengue, leishmaniasis, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, and tuberculosis.

Note: TDR funds research under five work plans: Strategic and Discovery Research, Product Development and Evaluation, Implementation Research and Methods, Research Capability Strengthening, and the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria. The following types of grants are available under each work plan:

Collaborative research grant

Purpose: To support goal-oriented research in each work plan.
Eligibility: No restrictions specified.
Deadline: Two months before relevant steering committee / task force meeting.

Project development grant

Purpose: To help scientists to formulate technically sound full-scale research proposals.
Eligibility: Nationals of developing countries.
Financial Provisions: Maximum of US$10,000, non renewable.
Deadline: Open.

Director’s initiative fund

Purpose: To provide rapid funding for preparatory research or research relevant to disease control outside of current work plans.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Financial Provisions: Maximum of US$15,000, non renewable.
Deadline: Open.

Research and development-driven capability strengthening grants

Purpose: To support projects based on targeted R&D driven capability strengthening initiatives.
Eligibility: Researchers in all disease endemic developing countries.
Deadlines: See specific calls for applications, listed below and on the TDR website at http://www.who.int/tdr/grants/deadlines/default.htm.

Capability strengthening grant for malaria research in Africa (MIM/TDR)

Purpose: To support the development of malaria control tools.
Eligibility: African research groups.
Deadline: TBA for 2006.

Strategic Social, Economic and Behavioural Research

Purpose: To support research on one of five topics: understanding and remedying access barriers to prevention, therapy, and information; understanding fundamental social issues related to stigma and adherence to treatment and prevention; elucidating the dynamics of human resources in infectious disease control programs; elucidating transaction costs in infectious disease control programs; and understanding and addressing child vulnerability and resilience, with a focus on infectious diseases among children in conflict situations.
Eligibility: Each research team must include a trained social scientist. PI should ideally be a national of a disease endemic country, though exceptions may be made for DEC nationals residing in a non-DEC country.
Deadline: February 17 2006.

Drug discovery research

Purpose: To support drug discovery research in developing countries focusing on the TDR target diseases.
Financial Provisions: Proposals up to US$70,000 per year will be considered. Network activities involving multiple partners as well as HTS campaigns will attract a higher level of funding.
Deadline: February 17 2006.

Vector Research on Human African Trypanosomiasis

Purpose: To support research concerning the vectors for African Trypanosomiasis, including genetics, population biology, and methods of vector control.
