Category Nitros, Aromatic
Description Colorless to slightly yellow crystals; [HSDB]
Sources/Uses Used as an intermediate for insecticides, fungicides, bactericides, and dyes; used as a leather treatment agent; [HSDB] Used to produce dyes, paints, rubber chemicals, and fungicides; [ATSDR ToxProfiles]
Comments Methemoglobinemia has been reported. [HSDB] 4-Nitrophenol is more toxic than 2-nitrophenol in animals. Rats exposed to 2-nitrophenol at 112 mg/m3 for 2 weeks develop methemoglobinemia. No effect after dust exposures of 30 mg/m3 for 3-6 hours/day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks; [ATSDR ToxProfiles] A skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritant; May cause yellow stains on the skin; Can induce methemoglobinemia; May cause skin sensitization after prolonged contact; [ICSC]
