Formula C5-H6-N2
Major Category Nitrogen Compounds
Synonyms 2-Aminopyridine; alpha-Aminopyridine; 1,2-Dihydro-2-iminopyridine; 2-Aminopryidine; 2-Aminopyridine; 2-Pyridinamine; 2-Pyridylamine; Amino-2 pyridine; alpha-Aminopyridine; alpha-Pyridinamine; alpha-Pyridylamine; o-Aminopyridine; UN2671; [ChemIDplus]
Category Pyridines
Description White powder, leaflets, or crystals with a characteristic odor; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses Used to manufacture drugs and dyes; [Merck Index # 473]
Comments A chemical plant worker died after a spill which contaminated his clothing. He did not remove his clothing, and symptoms began about 2 hours after the exposure with headache and dizziness followed by respiratory distress and convulsions. [ACGIH]
Exposure Assessment
Skin Designation (ACGIH) No
TLV (ACGIH) 0.5 ppm
PEL (OSHA) 0.5 ppm
IDLH (NIOSH) 5 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs Very little quantitative data are available on which to base an IDLH for 2-aminopyridine. The chosen IDLH is based on the statement by ACGIH [1971] that a 5-hour exposure to about 5 ppm produced headache, increased blood pressure, and nausea in a worker [Watrous and Schulz 1950].
Vapor Pressure 0.09 mm Hg
Explanatory Notes Flash point = 198 deg F; [CAMEO]
Adverse Effects
Neurotoxin Other CNS Neurotoxin
