The NIDDK, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) support a program in research training and career development in pediatric diabetes (supported by RFA-DK-02-024). This program fosters development of a diverse and highly trained workforce of pediatric endocrinologists to assume leadership roles related to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research efforts in the area of pediatric diabetes.

Institutional research training grants (T32) are a desirable mechanism for the postdoctoral training of physicians who may have extensive clinical training but have limited research experience. Clinical scientist career development programs (K12) assist in the transition of clinical investigators to an independent research career. In combination, the T32 and K12 programs provide an opportunity for continuous training from the clinical fellowship years to emergence as a fully trained independent investigator.
