Report on Public Trust in Clinical Research Available Online

Format: Web Site
Institute: Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL), Office of the Director (OD)

The report and recommendations from the NIH Director's Council of Public Representatives (COPR) workshop, Inviting Public Participation in Clinical Research: Building Trust through Partnerships, is now available online. This workshop took place on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, in October, 2004. More than 80 participants, representing the various communities who are involved or have an interest in clinical research, met to discuss the public's perception of medical research.

After the workshop, the COPR made a series of recommendations that fall into the following areas:

  • Building trust through community partnerships.

  • Building relationships with patients.

  • Building partnerships with community providers.

  • Building trust in scientists.

  • Building trust in the NIH and scientific research.
This report includes COPR’s recommendations, as well as ideas for actions that the NIH could consider. NIH has already begun to address these issues as part of its Public Trust Initiative and the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research. COPR's hope is that this report will reinforce those efforts and stimulate additional, complementary actions that will further the goal of enhancing public trust in the clinical research enterprise.
