NCI Solicits Public Comment on the Role of the Advocacy Community Format: Web Site Institute: National Cancer Institute (NCI) "NCI’s Challenge Goal to the nation is to eliminate the suffering and death due to cancer. What role does the cancer advocacy community play in achieving the Challenge Goal?"
Advocacy groups and members of the public may respond to this question through March 31 on a new NCI Web site, NCI Listens and Learns. The site, established and run by NCI and the NCI Director's Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG), is designed to increase NCI's communication and collaboration with the cancer advocacy community and the general public.
NCI and DCLG will pose questions on a monthly basis, giving participants four weeks to comment. Visitors to the site can see the discussion as it occurs. Advocacy groups seeking to post comments will register with the Web site and designate a representative to submit comments on the organization's behalf. Members of the public must also register. NCI will summarize the comments received and then post its response, indicating what will be done with the feedback.
NCI Listens and Learns will operate as a one-year pilot project to see if it fulfills NCI/DCLG's objectives to: - Increase the amount of high-quality input received from advocacy organizations and the public on NCI's strategic plans and initiatives.
- Increase the number and diversity of advocacy organizations providing input, including identifying areas of converging and diverging opinions.
- Improve NCI's plans and programs based on the input received.
- Enhance the collaborations between NCI and the communities it serves.
