The Maternal Opioid Treatment: Human Experimental Research (MOTHER) Project is an international multi-site clinical trial comprised of eight research grants—six in the United States and one each in Canada and Austria—to evaluate the efficacy of buprenorphine as a pharmacotherapy for pregnant opioid dependent women.   Multiple sites provide the necessary number of patients to test this new therapy.

Mission:

To assess in opioid-dependent pregnant women the efficacy of buprenorphine for improving birth outcomes and reducing neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) relative to methadone
