What to Expect

Women who choose to participate will be asked to complete family history and personal medical history questionnaires and to provide a blood sample. In addition to providing blood and medical information, women will be given:

• A mammogram
  
  
• Breast and pelvic examinations
  
  
• Instruction on how to do a breast self-examination
  
  
• Ovarian cancer screening with the CA-125 blood test and transvaginal ultrasound of the ovaries
  
  
• Sampling of breast duct cells (over 95 percent of breast cancer starts in these cells). Procedures used will include either Breast Duct Lavage, in which cells are washed from the breast ducts; Nipple Aspiration, which uses gentle suction to collect fluid from the nipple; or Needle Biopsy.
  
  
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan - this uses a strong magnetic field instead of x-rays to create a picture of the breast and may give a clearer view of breast tissue in young women, without exposing them to radiation.

All study-related medical expenses and travel costs to the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland are paid by NCI. If additional studies or evaluations are required, these will be done at the Clinical Center.
