COPR Member Palermo Leads Forum at Albert Einstein College of Medicine

COPR Member Ann-Gel Palermo, M.P.H., led a forum at Albert Einstein College of Medicine sponsored by the Bronx Center for Reducing and Eliminating Ethnic Disparities and the Hispanic Center of Excellence. She gave a presentation on the COPR and keeping the public informed and involved in scientific research.

COPR Member Pavão Participates in the National Institute of Mental Health Public Reviewer Orientation

COPR Member Carlos Pavão, M.P.A., was selected to participate in the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH’s) Public Reviewer Orientation in Washington, DC. As a public reviewer, he will read and provide written critiques of grant applications. NIMH has involved public reviewers as full voting members on committees reviewing mental health interventions and services research applications for the past nine years. The Institute has found that input provided by public reviewers adds important perspective and sensitivity to the review process and helps ensure the public health relevance of funded grants.

COPR Member Johnson Speaks at Florida Universities, Begins Nationwide Radio Tour

COPR Member Nicole Johnson, M.A., M.P.H., spoke at two Florida universities in September and October about NIH research and the TrialNet Type 1 Diabetes Research Study, produced by the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami, supported in part by NIH. She began a nationwide radio tour in November with Dr. Desmond Schatz. Ms. Johnson is creating a Web directory of diabetes research opportunities for people affected by diabetes and their families. The site will also be a resource for physicians and researchers.

COPR Member Freeman Participates at the Blue Ribbon Panel on the National Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center

COPR Member Elmer Freeman, M.S.W., participated on a panel to discuss “Partnerships Between Research Institutions and the Local Communities: Important Principles, Key Attributes, and Lessons Learned” as part of a meeting of the Blue Ribbon Panel on the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center. The meeting is part of a larger effort to address and expand upon community engagement interests and activities for the newly funded laboratory.

COPR Member Wendorf Participates in Strategic Planning Meeting for Child Health

COPR Member James Wendorf, M.A., participated in an expert panel in July convened by the Child Development and Behavior Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The panel made recommendations regarding a strategic research agenda to be presented to the Institute’s advisory council.

COPR Members Participate in the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Health Disparities Summit 2008

COPR Members Valda Boyd Ford, M.P.H., M.S., R.N., Carlos Pavao, M.P.A., Elmer Freeman, M.S.W., Naomi Cottoms, M.S., Cynthia Lindquist, Ph.D., and Beth Furlong, J.D., Ph.D., R.N., participated in the Cancer Health Disparities Summit 2008: Eliminating Cancer Health Disparities Through Science, Training, and Community, hosted by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. The summit highlighted the scientific achievements of the Institute’s cancer health disparities programs, promoted networking, drew attention to promising junior investigators, and demonstrated the importance of community involvement in research.

COPR Member Margo Produces Prostate Cancer Public Service Announcement Promoting Screening with Reference to National Cancer Institute Hotline

COPR Member Matthew Margo, LL.M., produced a prostate cancer public service announcement (PSA) that promotes screening and provides reference to the National Cancer Institute’s toll-free information line (1-800-4-CANCER) for the CBS Cares program. The PSA first aired during 60 Minutes on July 27, 2008.

COPR Member Naughton invites NCRR Director to the Rhode Island Research Alliance Symposium

COPR Member and Rhode Island State Representative Eileen Naughton, J.D., invited Barbara Alving, M.D., Director of the National Center for Research Resources to give the keynote address at the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council’s second annual Collaborative Research Symposium, entitled “Emerging Biomedical and Life Sciences Research in Rhode Island.” More than 300 participants from Rhode Island’s research community, legislation, and industry attended. Dr. Alving has overseen the launch of the Clinical and Translational Science Award program.

COPR Alumna Lappin Presents the Joseph Leiter Lecture at the National Library of Medicine

COPR Alumna Debra Lappin, J.D., presented the Joseph Leiter Lecture on “The 21st Century Patient—A New Partnership with the Biomedical Enterprise” at the National Library of Medicine. Her presentation recognized the evolution of patient involvement in medical research endeavors and the establishment of the COPR as an integral part of expanding the NIH’s public engagement efforts. Ms. Lappin was an inaugural member of the COPR and currently serves as a member of the Advisory Council to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

COPR Member Wong Presents at the Adult Congenital Heart Association Annual Conference

COPR Member Jim Wong, Ph.D., presented “The National Institutes of Health: What do they do for you?” at the Adult Congenital Heart Association annual conference. The conference included 380 patients, family members, and medical professionals.

COPR Member Jaquet Presents at the American Association for Dental Research Conference

COPR Member Brent Jaquet spoke about the COPR at the 2008 American Association for Dental Research Conference. Mr. Jaquet addressed the roles and responsibilities of the COPR members and highlighted the Council’s accomplishments over the past 10 years.

COPR Members Palermo and Mau Participate on Partners in Research Awards Program Panel

COPR Members Ann-Gel Palermo, M.P.H., and Marjorie Mau, M.D., M.S., participated on the review panel for the newly established Partners in Research Awards Program, which is coordinated under the NIH Public Trust Initiative. The program is based on the goals to increase public trust in and understanding of NIH and to foster a new paradigm for the future of medical and behavioral research.

COPR Member Mau and COPR Alumnus Yee Publish an Article on the Council’s Efforts

COPR Member Marjorie Mau, M.D., M.P.H., and COPR Alumnus Douglas Yee, M.B.A., published an article in the January 2008 issue of the Hawaii Medical Journal based on the full Council’s editorial on public participation in biomedical/behavioral research, which was developed through group efforts during the spring and summer of 2007.

COPR Members Review the New Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization (RCDC) Research Categorization Tool

COPR Members Valda Boyd Ford, M.P.H., Brent Jaquet, Michael Manganiello, M.P.A., Anne Munoz-Furlong, and James Wendorf have been asked to help NIH evaluate a new research categorization tool. The Office of Portfolio Analysis and Strategic Initiatives (OPASI) is convening a Public Review Working Group with the goal of objectively validating the new RCDC tool and related process. This Working Group will examine whether NIH has been successful in creating a transparent, scientifically defensible, consistent, and efficient system for categorizing NIH research projects.

COPR Members will participate in four hours of teleconference, online training, and use of the system over a two-month period (late January–March 2008). The findings from this working group will be posted on the OPASI Web site and distributed through other channels as appropriate.

COPR Member Chaite Joins the National Advisory Research Resources Council

COPR Member Wendy Chaite, Esq., has been appointed to the National Advisory Research Resources Council. The National Advisory Research Resources Council comprises 18 appointed members who serve for overlapping four-year terms. The membership includes leaders in scientific disciplines related to the activities of NCRR as well as members of the general public who are leaders in fields of public and health policies, law, economics, and management. The Council meets three times a year to conduct second-level review of applications as required by law. The Council also advises NCRR on other funding activities, policies, and program considerations.

COPR Member Johnson Interviews NIH Director on dLife

COPR Member Nicole Johnson, M.P.H.(c), interviewed Dr. Elias Zerhouni on CNBC’s segment of dLife, a show dedicated to diabetes that features insights into diabetes science, psychology, and daily living. dLife aired the interview with Dr. Elias Zerhouni that focused on the general role and philosophy of NIH and how NIH contributes to diabetes research three times in 2007.

Ms. Johnson gives about one presentation a month to health advocacy groups about NIH and medical research, and she uses NIH as a resource. She continuously refers to discussions with Dr. Zerhouni and Dr. Raynard Kington, NIH Deputy Director, from COPR public sessions.

COPR Members Mau and Ahmed Participate on the Working Group of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) to Examine Peer Review

COPR Members Marjorie Mau, M.D., M.S., and Syed Ahmed, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H., are participating on the external ACD Working Group to examine the peer-review process. Dr. Zerhouni established internal and external ACD working groups to examine the process. The two new NIH working groups will seek input from the scientific community, including investigators, scientific societies, grantee institutions, and voluntary health organizations, as well as from within NIH. The groups will study the context, criteria, and culture of peer review to make sure the most talented individuals and reviewers are engaged in the process.

Results from the ACD peer review working group were presented to the full ACD in December 2007. The internal NIH steering committee working group presented its findings to the NIH Director’s Steering Committee during the same month. Both working groups will meet in January 2008 to develop a set of integrated recommendations for next steps.

The ACD advises the NIH Director on policy matters important to the NIH mission of conducting and supporting biomedical and behavioral research, research training, and translating research results for the public. Additional information is available at www.nih.gov/about/director/acd/index.htm.

COPR Member Johnson Tours NIDDK Laboratory

Location: National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland

COPR Member Nicole Johnson, M.P.H.(c), visited the laboratory of Dr. David Harlan in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and aired the tour on a segment of dLife. Dr. Harlan spoke about diabetes research and innovations in pancreatic cell imaging and cell transplantation. The tour and interview were a look into some of what NIDDK is currently doing in diabetes research. The point and goal was to bring NIH/NIDDK science to people living with disease and to translate some of the exciting progress at NIH/NIDDK into potential and hope for those who are suffering. The interview and tour aired twice in 2007.
