Comments In the past, some workers heavily exposed to vinyl chloride monomer developed small erosions of the bone usually confined to the distal phalanges. Other areas sometimes affected were the metatarsals, sacroiliac joints, distal clavicles, and the mandible. [Rosenstock, p. 537] This syndrome was seen in workers who cleaned reactor vessels with an attack rate of 10-15 cases per thousand. The syndrome was reported in 7 of 32 plants surveyed and resolved spontaneously after removal from exposure. No new outbreaks have been reported since the early 1970s. [Lewis R. Vinyl Chloride and Polyvinyl Chloride. Occupational Medicine STAR 14(4):719-720, 1999]
