Herbert M. Geller,, Ph.D., Investigator |
|
Dr. Geller obtained his B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the City College of
New York, and
his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. After
a
Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Rochester, Dr. Geller moved to a
faculty position at
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where his early research focused on the
physiology and
pharmacology of hypothalamic neurons. After a sabbatical year at University
College London,
Dr. Geller began to focus on the role of astrocytes in shaping neuronal growth
and development.
He has been an adjunct/visiting professor at the University of Maryland and
Nagoya City
University, Japan. In 2001, Dr. Geller joined the NIH, NHLBI as Director,
Office of Education
and Chief of the Developmental Neurobiology Section. Dr. Geller's laboratory
studies the cell
biology of astrocytes, especially the role of the glial extracellular matrix in
shaping axonal
growth, both during development and after central nervous system injury. Most
recently, the
laboratory has focused on carbohydrates as signaling molecules in the nervous
system.
