David C. Klein, Ph.D., Senior Investigator

Dr. Klein received his B.S. in Zoology from Cornell University and then worked in the Department of Biophysical Cytology at the Rockefeller University with Beatrice Magdoff. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from Rice University in 1968, where he investigated the effects of thyrocalcitonin on bone metabolism with Roy Talmadge. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Pharmacology Department of the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Dr. Klein studied the effects of prostaglandins on bone and began his career as a neuroendocrinologist, concentrating on the pineal gland. He moved to NICHD as a Staff Fellow in 1969 where he showed that serotonin N-acetyltransferase is the key enzyme controlling melatonin production. Dr. Klein received the G.J. Mendel Medal from the Czech Academy of Sciences in 1995. His laboratory, together with NIDDK collaborators, recently solved the structure of the serotonin N-acetyltransferase:14-3-3 regulatory complex and they are studying how this molecular complex controls the activity and stability of the enzyme.

Research Interests:
The Section on Neuroendocrinology studies molecular aspects of neural regulation, and uses the pineal gland as a model. This is a multidisciplinary program that probes the fundamental issues of mechanisms involved in the development of differentiated cells and neural control of daily changes in metabolism. The techniques used that range from protein crystallography to gene profiling to conditional gene deletion
