99% of NIH Library Journal Subscriptions Now Online

Imagine our glee when the percentage of NIH Library online journal subscriptions reached its current level—99%. That is an impressive number! Library staff are thrilled because having most of the journals online means that you have 24-hour access, from anywhere in the world (using your remote access account, of course). Whether you are at your desk in Building 10, or at your annual specialty conference in Europe, you can research publications discussing cutting-edge science.

Does the NIH Library Have the Journal I Want Online?
There are several ways to determine whether the journal that you are interested in is among the more than 9,000 online journals that the Library provides to NIH employees. (Of the Library's subscriptions, 72% of the current online journal holdings are accessible back to the first volume.) Here are common ways to see what is available:

  1. Mouseover Research Tools on the top menubar of the NIH Library website and choose Online Journals from the drop-down menu. Then click on the letter of the alphabet that begins the journal's title that you want.
  2. Use the NIH Library online catalog (access from Quick Links/Online Catalog on the left frame of the website or from the drop-down menu under Research Tools). Type the name of the journal in the query box and click on Go.
  3. Link to online journal articles from within databases and archives such as Scopus®, Web of Science®, Science Direct®, JSTOR®, and PubMed®. For direct access to the full text of journal articles identified through a PubMed search, use the NIH Library's PubMed @ NIH link located on the left, under Quick Links. By using this path, you are recognized as working at NIH and the NIH Library's FULL-TEXT PLUS! button appears.

But I Need a Print Journal
Some journals are still available in the print version. Journals such as Nature and Science can be found on the shelves in the lower level of the Library. Use the online catalog to search for a title. The individual catalog record will indicate the date range of print copies, if available.

How Can I Suggest the Library Purchase a Specific journal?
Choose Suggest a Resource from the drop-down menu under Library Services to suggest journal (or book) purchases. Library staff like to know what journals you need to do your work that are not currently in the collection. We review all requests for new journal title purchases, evaluate the potential level of NIH use, and then perform a cost analysis. If a journal only gets occasional use, the Library opts to purchase that journal's contents on an as-needed basis through Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery.

For assistance with any journal issue—availability, ordering, copying, electronic link not working—call Reference & Information Services at 301-496-1080, Monday-Friday, or email us at nihlibrary@nih.gov.
