Theresa Lawrence, LCDR, PhD

(W) 301-496-0751
Senior Scientist Management Officer Microbiologist
Office of Research Services, Office of the Director (ORS/OD)

Theresa Lawrence is a microbiologist in the Veterinary Resources Program, Division of Intramural Research Services, Office of Research Services, Office of the Director. She is responsible for the scientific and administrative direction of the diagnostic bacteriology laboratory. The laboratory provides a laboratory animal diagnostic service, a bacteriologic health surveillance service, and an environmental monitoring service for the NIH intramural research community. Her goal is to make this laboratory a premiere laboratory in the field veterinary diagnostic microbiology.

Theresa received a Ph.D. in Pathology in the specialty area of clinical microbiology from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia in 1990. Subsequently, she completed a fellowship in the postdoctoral residency program in medical and public health laboratory microbiology at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, New York. During her fellowship, she received training in diagnostic bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology and rapid diagnostic techniques. In 1993, she began her career at the NIH.

The Management Cadre Program has provided Theresa with a meaningful development and growth opportunity. Through formal training, she completed supervisory training and advanced management competency courses. In addition to formal training, Theresa completed a 5-week managerial assignment in which she gained an overview of policy development and implementation in the intramural program. The Program has given Theresa a more global understanding of the NIH.
