Theresa Lawrence is a microbiologist in the Veterinary Resources
Program, Division of Intramural Research Services, Office of
Research Services, Office of the Director. She is responsible
for the scientific and administrative direction of the diagnostic
bacteriology laboratory. The laboratory provides a laboratory
animal diagnostic service, a bacteriologic health surveillance
service, and an environmental monitoring service for the NIH
intramural research community. Her goal is to make this laboratory
a premiere laboratory in the field veterinary diagnostic microbiology.
Theresa received a Ph.D. in Pathology in the specialty area
of clinical microbiology from the Medical College of Virginia,
Richmond, Virginia in 1990. Subsequently, she completed a fellowship
in the postdoctoral residency program in medical and public health
laboratory microbiology at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo,
New York. During her fellowship, she received training in diagnostic
bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology
and rapid diagnostic techniques. In 1993, she began her career
at the NIH.
The Management Cadre Program has provided Theresa with a meaningful
development and growth opportunity. Through formal training,
she completed supervisory training and advanced management competency
courses. In addition to formal training, Theresa completed a
5-week managerial assignment in which she gained an overview
of policy development and implementation in the intramural program.
The Program has given Theresa a more global understanding of
the NIH.
