Getting Started - Authorized User Training

To become an Authorized User (AU) an individual user must be nominated by their Scientific Director to be enrolled in the Radiation Safety for Authorized User course. You nominee must attend the four day Radiation Safety for Authorized Users course which is held twice a year (depending on the needs of the research community). Contact the Training Coordinator at 301-496-2255 to learn the dates of the next scheduled course.   A nominee must attend and successfully complete the course and submit the NIH 465-1 "Application for Radionuclide Authorization" to the Division of Radiation Safety for review.   Final approval by the Radiation Safety Committee is required to become an Authorized User.

The Radiation Safety for Authorized User course is held over three day period period Wednesday through Friday with a final exam on the following Monday and includes lectures, interactive demonstrations, quizzes, homework and a final exam.

If you were an AU prior to leaving the NIH, you can become re-authorized upon your return by simply submitting the NIH 465-1, Application for Radionuclide Authorization, to the DRS.You are not required to attend the four day class, but are encouraged to do so if you have been away from NIH for a number of years.
