CIS Partnership Program

NCI's Decision About the CIS Partnership Program   November 5, 2008

Serving Communities in Partnership

Reaching the public with information about cancer in ways that are most likely to help people take action is a job no single organization can accomplish on its own. The Cancer Information Service expands its reach by developing partnerships with nonprofit, private, and other government agencies at the national, regional, and state levels.

The CIS specifically reaches out to partners that have an established presence in the region, are trusted within their communities, and are dedicated to serving minority and underserved populations. The CIS Partnership Program brings cancer information to organizations that reach people most in need. The Partnership Program is a nationally coordinated, regionally focused program committed to reaching minority and underserved populations that do not have adequate access to health information and services.

  • Minority audiences include Blacks/African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

  • Medically underserved audiences include older Americans and individuals living in communities lacking adequate health services or experiencing language, educational, financial, or transportation barriers.

Regional Partnerships

Strengthened by its regional structure, the Cancer Information Service focuses on the distinct needs in each community to provide a service tailored to culturally diverse populations throughout the Nation.

Regional partners are selected by Cancer Information Service offices based on the cancer burden, needs, and cancer control priorities of the geographic region they serve. Regional partners represent underserved communities within the Cancer Information Service region that are interested or involved with cancer-related education and information programs.

National Partnerships

National partners are organizations that reach audiences with a disproportionately high incidence or mortality from cancer and provide cancer education programs throughout the country. Although these partnerships are established at a national level, programs and activities take place within the Cancer Information Service regional office and the state, regional, or local level of the national partner organization.
