Facility Information

Between 1994 and 2005, the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) collected information from 243 radiology facilities that participated through one of the seven BCSC mammography registries. These facilities represent 2.4% of the approximately 10,000 FDA-certified mammography facilities in the United States in 2000.

Sixty percent of radiology facilities participating in the BCSC are located in an urban setting. The majority of the participating facilities are non-profit (71%) and are not associated with an academic medical center (89%).

The following figures and accompanying explanatory notes provide summary information about the facilities that participated in the BCSC from 1994 to 2005, including facility location, radiology practice type, and services provided by the facilities.

Location of Radiology Facilities Participating in the BCSC from 1994-2005

Pie chart titled: Location of Radiology Facilities Participating in the BCSC from 1994-2005[D]

This figure shows the distribution of the location of 243 radiology facilities that participated in the BCSC during the years 1994 to 2005. Most facilities (61% after excluding facilities for which these data were not available) are located in a hospital or are associated with a hospital and 30% are in an office not associated with a hospital. Ten facilities (4%) are mobile vans.

Radiology Practice Type of Facilities Participating in the BCSC from 1996-2005

Pie chart titled: Radiology Practice Type of Facilities Participating in the BCSC from 1996-2005[D]

This figure shows the distribution of the radiology practice type of 243 radiology facilities that participated in the BCSC for the years 1994 2005. The majority of facilities (60% after excluding facilities for which these data were unavailable) are full diagnostic radiology practices. Twenty-three percent are limited to breast imaging only and 11% are multi-specialty breast centers. The remaining 6% are non-radiology practices such as OB/GYN offices.

Services Available at Radiology Facilities Participating in the BCSC from 1996-2005

Pie chart titled: Services Available at Radiology Facilities Participating in the BCSC from 1996-2005[D]

This figure shows the distribution of the services available at radiology facilities that participated in the BCSC for the years 1994-2005. After excluding facilities for which these data were unavailable, 61% of facilities provide both screening and diagnostic services, including biopsies, 20% provide screening and diagnostic mammograms but no biopsies, and 19% provide screening mammograms only.
