Starting Tips

Screen Resolution

Having trouble viewing the site? You may need to adjust your screen resolution. It is best viewed at 800 pixels by 600 pixels and above.

For Windows: From the "Start" button on the bottom task bar select "Settings." Choose "Control Panel". Next select "Display." Select the "Settings" tab from the Display Properties menu and use the slide under "Desktop Area" to adjust screen resolution to 800x600 or above.

For Macintosh Operating Systems: In the Apple Menu select the sub-menu called "Control Panels." Highlight the Control Panels menu, then the "Monitors and Sound" menu. When you release the mouse button, the menus should disappear and be replaced by a large window with several options: Color, Alert Sounds and Screen Resolution are among them. "Screen Resolution" is in the smaller window at the bottom of the larger window. Highlight the desired screen resolution and release the mouse.

Take Action

This site provides the background, resources and tools to help you enact system changes. By presenting the facts, we hope to provide a catalyst for you to take action. Also, look to your patients and their families and work to realize your vision for better diabetes care.

Start Big

One tactic for utilizing this site is to begin by reviewing the main concepts of each section, then bookmark specific pages to return to for details, examples and tools. To bookmark a page in either the Windows or Macintosh platform, simply click on Favorites (Internet Explorer) or Bookmarks (Netscape) on the top menu bar and select Add to Favorites. If you prefer using a keyboard shortcut, you can. In the Windows platform use the "Ctrl D" combination and in the Macintosh platform, use the "Command D" combination.

Commit Time

To do justice to the concepts presented here, set aside about 30 minutes to initially browse through the main points so you can determine when you are ready to come back to the site to research and consider these serious topics.

Overcome Obstacles

It may be tempting as you use this site to let the issues involved in making system changes create a pessimistic "it'll never work" attitude cloud your vision. Before you let any challenge become a major stumbling block, note that many of the common issues are addressed in the Issues section. No issue is totally insurmountable.

Customize

The models and examples included in this site are meant to be lampposts, not directions. Users are encouraged to adapt, amend and customize as needed to create the system that would best meet their needs.

Consensus

Keep in mind that system changes usually require the consensus and cooperation of many people, but one person can certainly take the initiative to instigate the change process and encourage efforts. You could be that person.

Share Concepts

Forward a link to the website to colleagues. Get a conversation started. Collect opinions and share your thoughts with others. At the bottom of each page, there is a button to click if you want to e-mail that page with a message to a co-worker or colleague.

Join Force

Partner with a co-worker in the same organization or a colleague across town to work as a team to digest this site and choose sections of special interest where you want to begin your focus.

Search for Topics

Many will come to this site with a particular issue or question in the forefront of their priorities. If this is the case, use the Search feature in the left column to find the sections that address that topic. It is difficult, however, to effectively address one specific detail without also understanding the larger questions and the long-term strategies involved. We encourage you to consider looking at the total, bigger picture, too.

Focus First

This is a large web site. You may want to focus on one area first. Consider choosing the area in which your changes will have the most dramatic impact. Another approach would be to choose the areas with the least resistance so that "quick" successes can instill confidence for addressing the more challenging issues.

Provide Feedback

If you encounter a link or tool that is non-functional, we appreciate your feedback. Simply click on the Forum section and "Contact Us."

Best Efforts

A conscientious effort went into the selection of models and tools. We may have overlooked some very useful resources. If you know of a website, research or study that you feel should be included, please submit the information for review. Go to Forum and click on "Submit Tools"
