Welcome

The Nonproliferation Studies program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) provides focused, professionally oriented training in the concepts, technologies, and policies related to the spread of weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems, and the means for their control, as well as regional security issues involving the former Soviet Union, East Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia. The Nonproliferation Studies program features:

• A unique combination of formal coursework and on-the-job training through part-time, paid research assistantships at CNS.
• Internship opportunities at international organizations in the nonproliferation field including at the International Atomic Energy Agency (Vienna), the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (the Hague), the Conference on Disarmament (Geneva), the United Nations Department of Disarmament Affairs (New York), and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty Organization (Vienna) are available to full-time Monterey Institute students through the International Professional Semester Service (IPSS) (http://www.miis.edu/gsips-progs-ipss.html) program of the Graduate School of International Policy Studies. • Frequent seminars with high-level policymakers and analysts from around the globe enrich the experience of students at the Monterey Institute.
• Partial tuition scholarships for Monterey Institute graduate students working towards a Certificate in Nonproliferation Studies. Applicants should intend to pursue a career in the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction field. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, with both scholarly and professional experience taken into account.

Certificate in Nonproliferation Studies

The Certificate in Nonproliferation Studies prepares students for a variety of professional careers in the arms control and nonproliferation fields, including positions in government, academia, corporate research, journalism, public-interest groups, and international organizations. Many CNS alumni currently work professionally in the field at international organizations, NGOs, and U.S. government agencies such as the Departments of Commerce, Defense, Energy, and State.

Nuclear Nonproliferation and Arms Control J-term
January 11 - 30, 2008

A 2 unit J-term course aimed at students with limited/no experience in nuclear nonproliferation, arms control and disarmament, but interested in gaining basic understandings of issues.
Available to students outside the Monterey Institute as well as to non-students.
