TITLE: Laborlore: Social Justice, the Environment and the Ethics of Collaboration
SPEAKER: various speakers
EVENT DATE: 08/16/2007
RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes
DESCRIPTION:
The panel examines the work that the participants have done in mining communities in the US South and West by beginning with a consideration of pioneer scholar George Korson, one of the most prolific collectors and publishers of mining folksong, folklore and cultural history. By linking Korson's focus on local economic and political concerns to larger global environmental and human rights issues in contemporary mining sites in West Virgina and Idaho, the panelists open up broad issues for discussion. Among these topics are the responsibility of scholars and documentarians to engage in thorough fieldwork and alliance building in the communities where they work; the necessity of focusing on both tradition and change in local communities as technology shifts from handwork to mechanization; the need to examine the political and public contexts within which mining culture is situate; and how to represent community perspectives in the course of those collaborative projects.
