The Scoop
1. What is your advice to parents for passing the joys of reading on to their children?
I grew up in a family who respected and loved books. My favorite pastime as a child was to sit behind the big chair by the bookcase and read all my parents' books. My children grew up that way, too. They are all avid readers. And their homes are filled with books and their children, only two and one years old, are book lovers! I think families who read are essential for children to grow up as readers.
2. How do you find inspiration for your books?
I am inspired often by my own children and by children I visit in schools around the country. I am also inspired by great books. You can't imagine the excitement I feel when a wonderful book is published, even though I haven't written it! It encourages me to write better!
3. How do you decide on themes for books?
For me, the Sarah series is about family; how a family comes together and deals with life. It seems to me that the themes are fairly common all over the world. Families, in my opinion, are more alike than different all across the world.
4. What tips or advice can you share with young students who hope to start writing?
I think aspiring writers should read, read, read.
5. What is your list of favorite children or teen books?
I dearly love picture books, and Kevin Henkes' books always capture my heart. His latest is A Good Day; it's a lovely, simple book. I always love books by Katherine Paterson, Natalie Babbitt and Susan Cooper, among many others.
