Lincoln, Pryor, and Berry Announce More Than $170,000 for Trumann School District

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Representative Marion Berry (AR-01) today announced that the Trumann School District will receive a $171,958 grant through the Department of Education’s Carol M. White Physical Education Program.

Funds from the grant will allow the Trumann School District to offer organized physical activities before school and during lunch as well as expand options for high school physical education classes.  In addition, the Trumann School District will be able to partner with the Jonesboro YMCA to offer on-site activity-based programs to more students free of charge.  It is anticipated that the grant will be for a total of three years.

“Physical education is important to keeping our children active and healthy, and this Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant is a valuable investment in our future,” said Lincoln. “I applaud the Trumann School District for obtaining federal dollars that will help improve and expand physical education options for its students.”

“Physical fitness keeps kids healthy, enhances their mental development and provides an opportunity for positive social interactions,” said Pryor.  “I commend Trumann School District officials for seeking this funding that will enhance the growth and well-being of their students.”

"Today so many Americans are lacking proper nutrition and exercise in their daily lives," said Berry.  "This grant will teach children about healthy lifestyle choices and help them develop good habits that will improve the quality of their lives as they become adults.  I commend the Trumann School District and the teachers who are working tirelessly to make a positive impact on so many children."
Carol M. White Physical Education Program grants are awarded to local educational and community-based organizations in order to initiate, expand, and improve physical education programs for students in grades K-12.
