Deer Hunt in Cherokee Village
Important!!
If you as a Cherokee Village property owner would allow hunters to hunt on
your lot and/or around your house, please call into City Hall at
807-257-5522 and give your name, number and address to us. Then any hunter
that wishes to get permission to hunt on your property can then contact you
for that permission.
For those of you interested in participating in the deer hunt, follows is
an update.
Applications will be available July 1, 2008 at Cherokee Village City
Hall. The deadline to mail your application to AGFC is July 31, 2008. The
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will draw 200 names from a list of
applicants. The permit hunt will be open to anyone who holds a valid
Arkansas hunting license. To receive a permit, the hunter must pass a
proficiency test (shoot three consecutive arrows to the kill zone — the area
around the heart and lungs — of a life-size target from a distance of less
than 20 yards). Each approved hunter must pay a $35 fee, which includes Arkansas Bowhunters
Association membership, and covers liability insurance.
All approved hunters must attend an eight-hour bow course
that will be given by the Arkansas Bow Hunting Association on August 23rd at
the Omaha Center.
Hunting will not be allowed on SID property.
Only longbows, recurve bows or compound bows with at least 40-pound draw
weight and arrowheads at least seven-eighths of an inch wide may be used.
Hunters who kill deer in the city will have to keep the animals covered
while they’re being carried to vehicles, and they will have to obey other
rules intended to protect citizens, both physically and emotionally, during
the hunt.
Hunters will also be encouraged to donate some of the deer harvested to
Arkansas Hunters Feeding The Hungry (non-profit organization that pays for
processing cost of deer donated by hunters).
