Provenance:

The principal portion of the Aileen Moore Topping Collection was sent by Topping to Paul Smith of the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress beginning in 1980 for use in preparation of volumes 10-20 of Letters of Delegates to Congress (Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1976-94). Topping's daughter, Anne Topping Weed, sent the remainder of the items following her mother's death.

Scope and Content Note

The Aileen Moore Topping Collection contains typewritten English translations of reports of Spanish agents sent to the United States during the American Revolution to observe the Continental Congress. These reports span the years 1777-1785 and relate to missions led by Juan de Miralles (1777-1780) and Francisco Rendon (1780-1785). The translations were made by Topping from originals located in the Archivo Histórico Nacional and the Archivo General de Indias.
