Scope and Content Note

The papers of Hope Ridings Miller (1906-2005) span the years 1887-1998, with the bulk of the material dating from 1934 to 1990. Included are correspondence, interviews, invitations, news clippings, photographs, and published writings. The papers reflect Miller's career as "Society Page" editor of the Washington Post (1938-1944), associate editor and editor of Diplomat magazine (1952-1966), and author of various newspaper columns, magazine articles, and three books, all dealing with Washington social and diplomatic life. Miller was associated with many of Washington's social elite, such as Evalyn Walsh McLean. Her papers contain transcripts of a series of interviews with McLean conducted by Boyden Sparkes, 1934-1935, and correspondence, photographs, and writings about the well-known Washington hostess and ambassador, Perle Mesta. Other notable people represented in Miller's files include Lyndon B. and Lady Bird Johnson, Sam Rayburn, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
