Abstract: Physician and physiologist. Chiefly photocopies and transcripts of correspondence, biographical material, legal documents, certificates, a eulogy, printed matter, photographs, and an oil portrait of Breuer documenting his career as a physiologist and his collaboration with Sigmund Freud on the study of hysteria.

Provenance:

The papers of Josef Breuer, physician, physiologist, and colleague of Sigmund Freud, were given to the Library of Congress by his granddaughters Maria Kann and Mrs. Felix Ungar, by Mrs. Erich Schiff, and by the Sigmund Freud Archives between 1952 and 1993.

Processing History:

The papers of Josef Breuer were arranged and described in 1985. The collection was expanded and revised in 1991 and 1995. The finding aid was revised in 2007.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Josef Breuer (1842-1925) span the years 1859-1970 with the bulk of material dating from 1859 to 1925. The collection consists of correspondence, biographical material, legal documents, certificates, a eulogy, printed matter, photographs, and an oil portrait of Breuer. Most of the items are photocopies or transcripts. The location of the original documents is unknown.

Correspondents include Theodor Billroth, Franz Brentano, Siegmund Exner, Sigmund Freud, Theodor Gomperz, Friedrich Jodl, Maria von Ebner-Eschenbach, and various members of Breuer's family.

Typed transcripts of correspondence, only some of which can also be found among the photocopied manuscripts, are reproduced on microfilm received as part of the collection.
