    Not limited to African-Americans. This is an excellent source for information which would otherwise be difficult to obtain.

  • The Black Olympians, 1904-1984: July 22, 1984 -January 15, 1985, [essay by Lonnie G. Bunch III and Louie Robinson]. Los Angeles, Calif. (600 State Dr., Los Angeles 90037): California Afro-American Museum, 1984. 82 p.: ill.

    Published to accompany an exhibition (including film footage and slides) that was an official Olympic Arts Festival event produced in conjunction with the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. As a history of African-American participation in the Olympics, it stands on its own very well. It includes a bibliography and index of athletes.

  • The Complete Book of the Olympics, by David Wallechinsky. 1992 ed. Boston: Little, Brown, [1992] xxviii, 763 p.: ill.

    A useful publication, published since 1980, updated editions issued every four years. Beginning in 1993, the title split into two separate editions, corresponding to the staggered schedule of the winter and summer games. A volume for the summer games is expected in advance of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Arrangement is by event and includes top finishers, date of event, world record, and record holder at time of event (when applicable), narrative descriptions of many of the contests.

    Provides an alphabetical list of all Olympic medalists with full names and dates if known. Other sections include medal winners at summer and winter Olympics chronologically by event. Includes discontinued events.

    Biographical sketches of every U.S. medalist through the 1976 summer games and 1980 winter games (the United States boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics). Especially useful for lesser-known athletes. Grouped by sport, within sport by gender. Has an index and useful appendices that include records for age, number of individual appearances, and medals won by sport and Olympiad.
