Making of the Modern World 1450 - 1850
Access: On-Site Access Only
Description: Provides the full text of more than 61,000 books and scores of serials covering economic and business literature published from 1450 through 1850. MOME focuses on: commerce (shipping, piracy and smuggling); finance (development of accounting practices, specie debates and rise of stock companies and markets); social conditions (studies of public order, public utilities, debtor and creditor relations and regulations, penology, criminology, trade unions and temperance); politics; and trade and transport. The database documents the theories, practices, and consequences of economic and business activity in the West, from the last half of the 15th century to the mid-19th century. Includes facsimiles of rare books and primary source materials such as political pamphlets and broadsides, government publications, proclamations, and a wide range of ephemera - for example, MOME includes Adam Smith's 1759 publication "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" as originally published.
MOME combines the strengths of two pre-eminent collections: the Goldsmiths Library of Economic Literature at the University of London Library; and the Kress Collection of Business and Economics at the Harvard Business School (collectively known as the Goldsmiths-Kress library of Economic Literature, 1450-1850). Additional supplementary materials come from the Seligman Collection in the Butler Library at Columbia University and from the libraries of Yale University.
