"We are delighted by this new opportunity to use radio to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and good writing," said Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole. "The Florida Center for the Book will serve as a major partner in the project, and we hope that all of our state centers eventually will become involved." The 30-minute "The Sound of Writing" programs, launched on NPR in 1987, are hosted by Alan Cheuse and broadcast on 90 NPR affiliates around the country. Each program features a reading of two short stories. In its eight years, "The Sound of Writing" has established a reputation for presenting bright new talents alongside established masters of the genre, as well as providing kaleidescopic glimpses of contemporary American life. The Syndicated Fiction Project, which has produced 156 programs since 1987, will cease operation at the end of 1994. Its director, Caroline Marshall, will become Chair of Friends of "The Sound of Writing," a new support group for the radio program. In 1991, the Syndicated Fiction Project launched an anthology series based on the radio program. Two volumes have been published by Doubleday/Anchor Books, each edited by project director Caroline Marshall and by Alan Cheuse. The first volume, The Sound of Writing, was published in 1991; the second, Listening to Ourselves, appeared in 1994. The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries and to encourage the study of books and print culture. Its publications and projects are funded primarily by contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations. # # # PR 94-189 |
