Librarian of Congress Names 25 More Films to National Film Registry

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington today announced his annual selection of 25 films to be added to the National Film Registry. (See attached list.) The announcement was made at a press conference at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

This is the first year since the Film Registry was established by law in 1988 that the announcement of the 25 films selected for preservation at the Library of Congress has been made outside of Washington. The announcement coincided with the National Film Preservation Board meeting, held this year at MOMA. The Board advises the Librarian of Congress on the selection of films as well as on national film preservation policy.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the National Film Registry, with each list designed to reflect the full range and diversity of the American film heritage. The films are chosen because they are judged to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically" significant. Today's announcement brings the number of films placed on the registry to 150.
