Poets Stephen Dunn and Marilyn N. Waniek To Read at Library of Congress

Stephen Dunn and Marilyn Nelson Waniek will read from their work on Thursday, December 1 in the Library's Montpelier Room on the 6th floor of the James Madison Memorial Building. The reading, presented under the auspices of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund, will begin at 6:45 p.m. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry Rita Dove will introduce the poets. Tickets are not required.

Stephen Dunn is the author of nine collections of poetry, including Looking for Holes in the Ceiling (1974); Not Dancing (1984); Local Time (1986), winner of the National Poetry Series Open Competition; Between Angels (1989); and Landscape at the End of the Century (1991). A book of his prose, Walking Light: Essays & Memoirs, was published in 1993; his New & Selected Poems: 1974-1994 appeared in spring 1994. Mr. Dunn's awards and honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, three National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing fellowships, and a Distinguished Artist Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. He is Trustee Fellow in the Arts and professor of creative writing at Stockton State College in New Jersey.

Marilyn Nelson Waniek graduated from the University of California at Davis and holds an M.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota. Her books are For the Body (1978); Mama's Promises (1985); The Homeplace (1990), which was a finalist for the 1991 National Book Award and winner of the 1992 Annisfield-Wolf Award; and Magnificat (forthcoming); and two collections of verse for children. Her other honors include a Kent fellowship, two Pushcart Prizes, two creative writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, an individual artist's grant from the Connecticut Commission for the Arts, and the 1990 Connecticut Arts Award. She is a professor of English at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.
