English Folklorist To Lecture

The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress will present a free illustrated lecture at noon on Tuesday, November 1, by Malcolm Taylor, Head Librarian of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, Cecil Sharp House, London, England. The lecture will be held in the West Dining Room, Sixth Floor, Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. SE. (Capitol South Metro).

Mr. Taylor will discuss the two major English folk music revivals of this century using audio and video tapes, slides and photographs from the enormous collections of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library. Collections of the library include fieldwork done in England by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Cecil Sharp, Alan Lomax, Peter Kennedy, Peggy Seeger and others.

Mr. Taylor, a respected authority on British traditional culture, has edited and co-authored numerous books, sound recordings, and study guides on subjects such as sword, clog, and step dancing; English and Irish traditional singing; and the seasonal traditions of May and midwinter. He has co-written and presented numerous radio and television programs for the British Broadcasting Corporation, and is a favorite lecturer at conferences and folk festivals. In 1992, he received the prestigious Jubilee Medallion, awarded for services to traditional culture, from the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
