Librarian of Congress Names Senior Advisor for Diversity

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has announced the appointment of Jo Ann C. Jenkins, who has served with the Departments of Agriculture, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development and other agencies, as his senior advisor for diversity. She will assume her new post as special assistant in the Office of the Librarian October 17, with the assignment of monitoring the Library's quest for a culturally diverse work force in an environment of equal employment opportunity.

"We are fortunate to have found an experienced professional to assist our efforts to achieve a healthy and productive work place," said Dr. Billington. "Ms. Jenkins will be a key addition to my immediate staff."

Ms. Jenkins comes to the Library from the Federal National Mortgage Association, where she has been a consultant to the Office of Diversity for the last 19 months. She was director of the Office of Advocacy at the Department of Agriculture from 1990 to 1993 and special assistant for minority affairs to Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole from 1985 until 1987. In 1988 and 1989, she was a partner in a management consulting firm in Chantilly, Va. She held several posts with the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1981 until 1985.

She is a graduate of Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama.
