May 11, 1994Contact: Craig D'Ooge (202) 707-9189Center for the Book Hosts Conference of Book and Publishing Historians on July 14-16More than 80 scholars from 10 countries will present papers on different aspects of book history at the Library of Congress on July 14-16 during the second annual conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP). The conference will be hosted by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress with support from the Association of American Publishers. SHARP, which has more than 400 members, was established in 1991 by book historians from several countries to encourage and support research and teaching in the history of the book. It publishes a quarterly newsletter, an annual membership directory, and maintains SHARP-L, an electronic bulletin board that links hundreds of book historians throughout the world. More than 50 papers were presented at the first annual conference, held in New York City in June 1993. The third annual conference will take place at the University of Edinburgh in 1995.
