Center for the Book Receives Award from the American Printing History Association

In recognition of its "services in advancing understanding of the history of printing and its allied arts," the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress has received the American Printing History Association's annual Institutional Award. It was presented to the center's director, John Y. Cole, at the association's annual meeting, which was held on Jan. 29, 1994 at the New York Public Library.

The center's lecture and publishing programs were specifically cited. Since 1978, the center has sponsored publication of more than 25 books and 50 pamphlets. Books dealing with the history of books and printing include The Early Illustrated Book: Essays in Honor of Lessing J. Rosenwald, ed. by Sandra Hindman (1982) and The Printer & the Pardoner, by Paul Needham, both cooperative projects with the Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division; The History of Books: A Guide to Selected Resources in the Library of Congress, by Alice D. Schreyer (1987); and American Books in the Marketplace: R.R. Donnelley's Four American Books Campaign, by Claire Badaracco (1982).

The Center for the Book was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries and to encourage the study of books and print culture. Its projects and those of its 29 affiliated state centers and 128 national reading promotion partners are supported by private contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

This recognition from the American Printing History Association is the fifth award the center has received. The others have come from the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (1992); the Manhattan Council of the International Reading Association (1990); the White House Conference on Library and Information Services Task Force (1989); the International Book Committee (1987); and the National Education Association (1986).
