Love Poems To Be Read on Valentine's Day

The Library of Congress Office of Scholarly Programs will present three poets who will read old favorites as well as new poems about love in a complex contemporary world on February 14 at noon. The reading will take place in the Pickford Theater, third floor, Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E.

Leading the program will be Linda McCarriston, awarding-winning poet and this year's Jenny McKean Moore Visiting Writer in Washington at George Washington University. McCarriston's latest book, Eva-Mary, won the Terrence Des Pres Prize for Poetry and conveys a resilient human spirit with an immense capacity for love despite difficult odds. Her work-in-progress, Forward Desire, continues that theme.

Two other gifted poets, Nan Fry and Martin Galvin, will add their voices to this romantic reading. Fry, a faculty member at the Corcoran School of Art, is author of Relearning the Dark, a book containing sensuous poems with rich mythological undertones. Galvin, who teaches at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, is the author of Wild Card, a work that brings details from the natural world to the service of a mature and compassionate imagination. The Valentine's Day reading is the first in a planned "Poetry at Noon" series at the Library. A vernal equinox reading is planned this Spring, as well as a June reading of poetry appropriate for weddings.
