Media Advisory: Librarian of Congress Previews National Film Registry Tour

The Librarian of Congress James H. Billington will be in Madison, Wisconsin on Friday, October 6, for the start of the National Film Registry Tour. Together with distinguished actor James Earl Jones and noted screenwriter Fay Kanin, who chairs the National Film Preservation Board at the Library of Congress, Dr. Billington will speak to the press about the nationwide tour and the importance of film preservation at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 6, in the Governor's Conference Room, Room 115 of the East Wing of the Wisconsin State Capitol.

The tour celebrates American filmmaking and is part of a public awareness campaign by the Library and the Board to alert Americans to the need to preserve their endangered film heritage. The films were selected from the National Film Registry to illustrate the diversity of American film production and include a broad range of film types, dates and filmmakers.

The National Film Registry was established at the Library in 1988 and recognizes the richness of American filmmaking. Each year the Librarian adds 25 films to the Registry, based on their aesthetic, historical or cultural importance for the nation.

The Madison Civic Center, the Wisconsin Union and the Wisconsin Union Film Directorate Committee are sponsoring the tour in Madison, with the assistance of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research. Films will be screened October 6 - 9 at the Wisconsin Union Theater and Play Circle and the Oscar Mayer Theatre at the Madison Civic Center.
