FIELD DEFINITION AND SCOPE

Former title of the event, program, etc. used prior to the field 245 title. When displayed/printed as a note, former titles may be preceded by an introductory term or phrase, e.g., Former title:, that may be generated for display.

Former names of a primary name, if present in a 1XX Primary Names field, may be recorded in a 79X Local Added Entry field.

INDICATORS

SUBFIELD CODES

$a - Title
Former title (exclusive of any name or number of a part/section, remainder of title, and medium designator) of the event, program, etc.
$b - Remainder of title
Remainder of the title information.
$f - Dates of title use
Dates that indicate when the former title was used.
$g - Miscellaneous information
Miscellaneous information that is not more appropriately recorded in another subfield. It is used for information such as the phrase varies slightly, enclosed in parentheses.
$h - Medium
Medium designator used in the title.
$n - Number of part/section of the title
Number designation for a part/section of the title. Numbering is defined as an indication of sequencing of any form, e.g., Part 1, Section A.
$p - Name of part/section of the title
$6 - Linkage

$8 - Field link and sequence number

INPUT CONVENTIONS

Punctuation - Field 247 does not end with a mark of punctuation unless the last word in the field is an abbreviation, initial/letter, or data that ends with a mark of punctuation.
Initial Articles - Initial articles (e.g., The, La) are generally not recorded in field 247 unless the intent is to file on the article.
Multiple Fields - When there are multiple 247 fields, the fields are input according to the earliest date given in subfield $f, if present.
Display Constant - Introductory phrase Former title: is not carried in the MARC record. It may be system generated as a display constant associated with the tag.
