List of Classes
of
United States
Government Publications
Available for Selection
by
Depository Libraries
The List of Classes, an essential tool for Federal Depository Libraries, includes the classes of publications and GPO item numbers associated with them. The electronic versions of this title, updated monthly, are more current than the printed version. The List of Classes (and Related Files) contains a key to format designation codes and links to the most current versions of these text files: Inactive or Discontinued Items, List of Active Items and Class Stems, List of Classes, Classes No Longer Active, List of Classes, Appendix II, Alphabetic Listing of Government Authors through Update dates for these List of Classes and related files where the "Added" date records the date of the file.

The July 2008 issue of List of Classes is available as a PDF file from GPO. PDF versions of the printed issues for January 2008 and April 2007 are still available online but not linked from the FDLP Desktop.

Depository library staff should read the FAQ regarding GPO's practice of using item numbers 0556-C and 1004-E "to distribute, on occasion, key materials to ALL depository libraries."
Documents Data Miner 2 (hereafter called DDM 2) provides a searchable database version based on GPO's text files. DDM 2 users may download basic files as well as specific query returns.
Class changes and updates to the List of Classes are available as a downloadable spreadsheet from FDLP as Web Tech Notes. (The WEBTech Notes database remains unavailable.)
Depository Item
Selection Profile
Item Lister reflects each depository library's current item selection profile. Updated weekly, Item Lister's currency displays at the bottom of the listing. Libraries may drop items from their profiles at any time using GPO's Amendment of Item Selections form. Items may be added during the annual selection update cycle.
Item selection information is also contained in
DDM 2, which integrates current Item Lister, List of Classes, and Union List of Item Selections data to provide complete information on each item number.
FDLP Selection Mechanisms: Item Numbers and Alternatives
Site presents a review of the item number system used by libraries in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) to select tangible and electronic titles. Includes links to briefing papers explaining the current system and alternatives proposed in 2005 and 2006.
GPO Classification Manual
HTML and ASCII versions of the manual, revised January 1993, are available.
An Explanation of the SuDocs
Classification System
This is a basic explanation for those who find the GPO Classification Manual too detailed.
Inactive or Discontinued Items
from the 1950 Revision
of the
Classified List
Also known as the Inactive and Discontinued List, this listing of items, titles, and SuDocs classifications may be used to interpret early depository selection profiles for the purpose of profiling for early record loads. Electronic options include the searchable database in DDM 2, and the text file from GPO Access.
Checklist of United States public documents, 1789-1909
A digitized version of the 1909 checklist, created by Carlos Diaz, Government Documents Specialist, Evergreen State College. This site offers SuDoc classes for many early documents.

FDLP Desktop
The FDLP Desktop includes many useful sections, including the Depository Distribution page. Also included are Processing Tools which links to resources such as Amendment of Item Selections, Item Lister, and the official FDLP Libraries Directory. While not easy to find, the lists of current and former Direct Mail Items has been maintained. Many additional tools are available; browse the site for a complete listing.
Federal Depository Library Handbook
In January 2008, the handbook supreseded these publications: Federal Depository Library Manual and the Instructions to Depository Libraries (and Supplements).
Help
GPO's Online Knowledge Base (frequently referred to as the "CRM") is designed to be a single point of contact for those with questions for GPO. When GPO Access systems are down, call 866-512-1800 (toll-free) or 202-512-1800 in the DC area to report problems. Customer service hours are 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday (except Federal holidays).
WEBTech Notes
The searchable WEBTech Notes database is unavailable but a downloadable spreadsheet is available to answer questions about the creation and assignment of new GPO item numbers and changes in classification. WEBTech Notes is a searchable database of Administrative Notes Technical Supplement information. For late-breaking news, LPS posts announcements to GPO-FDLP-L. An archive is available for postings since June 2002. April 1998-May 2002 LPS postings are available as News (formerly known as askLPS FAQs and News. Contacts offers a listing of GPO managers but notes that problems should generally be reported to GPO's Help service (described above).
Shipping List Information
Depository Shipping Lists are available as downloadable files in dbf format from the Federal Bulletin Board. These files are used to produce a variety of products. Among these are HTML versions of shipping lists are available through the Enhanced Shipping List Service, produced through a cooperative agreement between the State University of New York at Buffalo and the Federal Depository Library Program.
The Enhanced Shipping List Service has a supplemental Dynamic Search Form accessing an Access database which includes most shipping lists from 2001-2002 and virtually all of the lists from 2003-present. Feedback on this database is requested by Timothy M. McCarthy.
DDM 2 is extremely useful for locating Federal Depository Library Program shipping list information for 1997-present. No specific browser is required, however Netscape 6+ or Internet Explorer 5.5+ is recommended. The user must have cookies and javascript turned on. DDM 2 offers includes searchable GPO shipping lists beginning with FY 1997. May be accessed by Title, Month, Year, Item or SuDoc Numbers, Format and Depository (Library) Number. Searches may combine access points. Users may choose to customize shipping lists, profiling lists for their depository library. Searchers will find that results from recent lists include HTML links to official PDF files at the FDLP's Shipping Lister site. Some users may wish to use accessed lists to download MARC records associated with the list.
Various printable versions of shipping lists are available. Shipping Lister: Shipping Lists in PDF Format allows users to print official copies of GPO shipping lists for paper, electronic, and those microfiche produced and distributed by GPO for FY 2001- . GPO asks libraries to use their Web claim form for such claims. NOTE: Shipping Lister does not include microfiche shipping lists. To obtain copies of microfiche lists for claiming, follow the procedures outlined in the FDLP FAQs page.
USGS "Depository Library Sending" lists are available in MS Word format from GPO's Federal Bulletin Board. When the page loads, scroll down toward the bottom, look for "U.S. Geological Survey Depository Shipping Lists Fiscal Year" and click on the desired year.
Web Claim form. The Library Programs Service asks that depositories please use the new Web Claim form for all claims against GPO-produced shipping lists, e.g., paper, separates, electronic, and those few microfiche shipping lists issued from GPO. A related Claims Copies Exhausted page linked from the Web Claim form been established for libraries to check before claiming missing titles.
Federal Depository Library Program publishes listings of the last or final shipping list numbers for each fiscal year to make it easier to identify missing shipments at the end of the fiscal year. Final lists are available for 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, and 2004.
If microfiche shipping lists are missing or late, check the List of Contractor-Issued Microfiche Shipping Lists to determine the responsible microfiche contractor. Problems with microfiche contractors should be reported using GPO's Help system, windowing to the category
> Federal Depository Libraries > ACQUISITIONS > Microfiche.
