For the second year in a row, the Genesee County drain commissioner's office will receive a federal grant to help construct the northeast relief sewer and Kearsley Creek interceptor. The 2003 Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development budget set aside $500,000 for the project. It is on top of $200,000 for the project from the Energy and Water budgets.
"We must commit resources for proper waste management to ensure the health and safety of our residents," said U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee, D-Flint, in announcing the grant.
The goal of the project is to construct 42 miles of sanitary sewer pipe and two pump stations to supplement Genesee County's outdated sewer systems.
