On Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the Library
of Congress Mumford Room Edward Burtynsky,
the celebrated Canadian photographer of
the environmental landscape, reviewed his
twenty-year career. The presentation marked
the Library's acquisition of eight of his
large-scale photographs (quarrying, mining,
recyling, oil refining, and ship breaking),
which were on exhibit in the Art Gallery
of the Canadian Embassy. Burtynsky's interpretation
of sites in the United States, Canada, Italy,
Bangladesh, India and China challenge us
to confront the effects of technological
and industrial expansion, while at the same
time, we stand in awe of their subversive
beauty.
