An American Pastime
|
The Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, sought to
assimilate Native Americans into white society. The coeducational
school enrolled students from several Native American communities
and taught them basic academic courses with emphasis on domestic
skills and industrial trades. All-American pastimes, such as football,
were also encouraged. The Library's Panoramic Photograph Collection
contains more than four thousand images, featuring American cityscapes,
landscapes, and group portraits--many of athletic teams.
