As middle class mass entertainments gained increasing popularity
in the late nineteenth century, so did the impetus to instruct
this new audience in the ways of appropriate public behavior.
By the time the motion picture industry had achieved full flower
in the 1910s, however, etiquette announcements like these were
used mainly for their entertainment value.
