Marian Catholic High School Student Wins
Top Honor in “An Artistic Discovery 2005”

Anastasia Pennington-Flax, a Junior at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, captured the Grand Prize Saturday in “An Artistic Discovery 2005,” Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr.’s annual high school art competition. The event was held at South Suburban College.
Ms. Pennington-Flax’s piece, “Les Feuilles Mortes,” which features a collage of tree photography, will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year. Her artwork will be unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony and exhibition on June 14th. As part of the grand prize, she was awarded a trip for two to Washington D.C. and overnight accommodations provided by the Southland Chamber of Commerce. South Suburban College also awarded Ms. Pennington-Flax a free art class. This is the second consecutive year a Marian Catholic High School student won first place in the competition.
The other winners were:
- Second Place: Carl Barker, Homewood-Flossmoor High School; untitled;
- Third Place: Demetrius Harmon, George Henry Corliss High School; “Alone” (self-portrait);
- Fourth Place: Miguel Cruz, George Henry Corliss High School, self-portrait.
Fifty-five students from 11 area high schools entered this year’s competition. Congressman Jackson said, ”I am impressed with the high quality of the art work. Many richly talented young artists in the Second Congressional District have chosen to use their creative energies in a very positive way … to produce cherished works of art.”
