Rep. Rick Larsen Announces Funding for
Bellingham Housing, Community Development

City receives nearly $1.4 million is federal assistance

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Rick Larsen today announced that nearly $1.4 million dollars in housing grants were attained for the city of Bellingham.

“These are resources that the city of Bellingham needs to continue to provide all its residents with a strong, safe community,” Larsen said.

The city will use the bulk of the grant on housing development and rehabilitation, as well as supporting local non-profits in their works for the people of Bellingham.

The city will use the funds to support the goals of their five-year “Consolidated Plan.”  This is the final year of the Consolidated Plan.  Specifically, funds are earmarked for the revitalization of city parks and trails and a homebuyer assistance program. New housing developments supported by this grant include the Washington Grocery Building and the Oakland Block.

“These projects contribute to our efforts on strengthening the city’s economic security,” added Larsen.

The funding comes from two sections of HUD- Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program. The CDBG has brought the city $904,000 and the HOME grant totaled $462,000.

The City of Bellingham will also use a portion of the grant on Human Services, including the Opportunity Council and domestic violence centers.
